We were doing a bit of research for our blog, looking at potential topics and found that one question stood out – who buys motorhomes. It’s one of the top questions relating to motorhomes on Google.
Frankly, we couldn’t believe it. Who buys motorhomes, surely it’s everyone who can. Who wouldn’t buy a motorhome, that would be a better question.
Then we took a moment to reflect. Motorhomes may be our passion but that isn’t true for everyone. There are people out there who are unsure if a motorhome is for them.
This is for them – and maybe for you. Who buys motorhomes? Let’s take a look.
People who want adventure
A motorhome is perfect for anyone who wants a little bit of excitement on their holiday.
Many people who buy motorhomes do so because they allow them to go on a holiday where they don’t know before it starts exactly what will happen. Not for them the dull routine of wake, pool, lunch, pool, sleep, meal, bed. They want more from a holiday.
Adventure doesn’t have to be trekking the Himalayas, it can be just enough adventure to elevate a holiday into a true experience, something you will remember.
People who want independence
It is perfectly possible to book a holiday just by clicking a few buttons online, then turning up at the airport months later.
Your transfers will be sorted, you will be taken to your room, at the end of the holiday you’ll be transferred back to the airport where you’ll wait with all the other exhausted holidaymakers who have had the exact same experience.
It might even be nice, it will certainly be easy.
What it won’t be is exactly what you want. It is holiday by numbers, the result of buying in bulk and economies of scale for the travel firm. Your holiday will be the same as thousands of others.
If you want an identikit holiday book through a major travel agent online. If you want some independence, you want something bespoke you’re going to have to find another way. A motorhome is one such option, it gives you freedom to make the holiday you want, not just the holiday that delivers good margins for the agents.
People with families
A motorhome is perfect for family holidays. You can easily have a holiday where you explore different areas, potentially having a few days in areas more suited to different family members.
You have a vehicle for all those days out and excursions and with many European countries so motorhome friendly, a day out can easily turn into an overnight stay. Heading to the beach for the day? Why not find a cheap local motorhome site and then just stay over.
Motorhomes even make the journey fun. Everyone has space to relax, there is entertainment on tap and you can stop whenever you want, whether it is for a rest, for lunch, or because you’ve just randomly gone past an awesome-looking waterpark.
People who don’t like travelling light
Want to take everything but the kitchen sink on holiday? With a motorhome you can (and it has a kitchen sink too).
Whereas a caravan is strictly limited in terms of the load weight it can hold, motorhomes allow the holidaymaker far greater licence to pack for every eventuality.
Whether it is outfits for all occasions, the golf clubs, tablets and games systems for the kids or a fully stocked larder, you can have it all in a motorhome.
People who think package holidays are hell on earth
You might have realised by now that we’re not huge fans of package holidays.
Hell on earth might be a bit extreme, however package holidays are never going to be better than a six out of 10.
With a motorhome, you have just enough structure but not too much and, most importantly, you can change things. If you book a package holiday and then find the resort is a disappointment, the hotel doesn’t match the brochure sell or the room is poor there is little you can do. With a motorhome you can change any aspect of a holiday as the holiday is happening.
This doesn’t only apply to eradicating negatives. You might have found a good site but then hear via word of mouth that there is a real hidden gem just a few miles away. On a motorhome holiday, you can make the change, turn a good holiday into a great one.
People who want long term value for money
In the long term, motorhome owners can save a huge amount on holidays. Of course there is a cost to buying a motorhome, but every holiday after that then saves money compared to paying for hotels and more costly transport.
Motorhome owners can also enjoy more trips – you have a base for visiting a city or the Lakes or a weekend on the coast. All of those are possible without a motorhome of course, but the hotels can be expensive, especially if you are looking to go peak season at short notice.
When motorhome owners chart the cost of the vehicle and running costs against the money saved on holidays they often find that over the course of a few years their overall outgoings are significantly lower. Savings on holiday play in to this – for instance eating in is a pleasure on a motorhome holiday, great local food and wine cooked in your own kitchen and enjoyed with a glorious view. Paying for expensive meals out simply isn’t necessary.
And what about all those times your motorhome is parked up, not being used? Many owners rent their vehicle out, there are even sites that take care of the process, matching those looking to rent a vehicle for a motorhome holiday with owners of a suitable vehicle.
Renting a motorhome out for a few key weeks every year can bring in a four-figure sum.
