Engine size, number of berths, MPG, length… there are plenty of obvious criteria to consider when buying your next motorhome.
But what about the small differences, the details lost until later down the line, when you’re three days into your first holiday…
Here we look at four of the small differences which can make all the difference.
To get the most out of your new motorhome, you want to be taking it out on regular trips, potentially covering thousands of miles during a tour of Britain or Europe.
You will have sat in the driver’s seat when testing the motorhome and taking it for a test drive, but did you consider the driver aids?
Cruise control can make life easier when facing forward, parking cameras and sensors help when going the other way. And there are other aids too – speed limiters, automatic gearboxes (which many drivers don’t even consider, yet they can be a great option), and then things within the cab itself. Even the positioning of cup holders or the GPS system can make a big difference; you want that driving position to be as comfy as possible.
The little things can make a big difference and the person doing most of the driving deserves to be taken care of!
There’s the obvious storage and then there’s the extra storage.
Some motorhomes have designs which go that bit further, there is not one cubic foot of wasted space.
It might be under the floor, it might be innovative systems under seats, it might be storage with clever pop-out panels. Some designers manage to make motorhomes into something approaching a Tardis; or Mary Poppins’ bag. There’s room for that, and that, and that and… where on earth did they fit that?
The extra storage can make all the difference, but there is one thing to check – make sure you get in first as everyone will have their beady eyes on it.
You want heating in your motorhome, that’s a given – however there’s heating and HEATING.
If you’re only going to be in warm climates in the summer, a fairly basic heating system might do the job, however there are motorhomes which pride themselves on being suitable for any climate.
Take a ski holiday for example – something which might not be your main reason to buy, but perhaps it’s a possibility for a trip at some stage? Some motorhomes will have you forgetting it’s -15 outside, in others you’ll be looking for the spare blankets. Maybe you left them in the extra storage.
If you’ve got broadband, you’ve got access to all your favourite websites, plus streamed music and video. And, while you’re watching something on Netflix, you can also check out TripAdvisor or similar – that small town you’re heading to next; what’s there to do to keep the kids entertained if the heavens open?
Bluetooth might appeal too – can’t find anything great on the radio, tired of the CDs – simply connect a phone or tablet via Bluetooth and play your favourite playlists.
Whatever you want to connect, you can nowadays – it’s worth giving thought to what you’ll want to be using when you’re parked up and settling down for the evening.
Those are four small things which can make a big difference once you’re out and about in your new motorhome. But everyone has their own little things, the things which might seem of little consequence to others, but help make a motorhome a real home for you.
