The primary aim when buying a motorhome might be to get a vehicle that opens up numerous holiday and short break opportunities, but it is also imperative that a motorhome purchase makes financial sense.
In this post we look at whether a motorhome has the potential to be a good investment and which factors come into play as we determine the answer.
Use it or lose it (money)
It goes without saying that you have to use a motorhome for it to stand any chance of being a sound investment.
A motorhome is not gold (though the interiors of some top of the range vehicles aren’t too far off that level of luxury) and so will not go up in value just sat on your drive.
It is true that motorhomes do not suffer depreciation at the same rate of many cars, but they do still depreciate.
A motorhome will not passively make you money, what it does have the potential to do is save you a considerable sum.
It’s all about the long term
A quality used motorhome is likely to cost anywhere up from £20,000, a top of the range new vehicle might cost more than £100,000.
In purely financial terms, for the motorhome to pay for itself it has to recoup the amount you pay for it.
Where the motorhome owner starts to recoup the sum, and quickly, is with every holiday and every trip away.
Holidays are thousands of pounds cheaper once you own a motorhome.
The savings are made against hotels, travel costs are much reduced and then there are the easy-to-overlook, yet enormous savings once on the actual break itself.
With a superbly equipped motorhome kitchen, eating in – or just outside, taking in the views, is a treat and so there is far less need to eat out at restaurants. Even taking advantage of the fridge and freezer to stock up on beers, wine, soft drinks and lollies can help save a small fortune.
Every weekend away sees great savings – the cost of a simple hotel break in the UK can be eye watering, a motorhome allows you to have the same breaks only at greatly reduced expense.
The motorhome can also be used as accommodation if you stay at wedding or a festival
Using your motorhome for the trips and holidays you would have otherwise taken will save the typical owners many thousands per year, it is of course impossible to put an exact figure on it, it will vary based on the nature of the holidays you used to take and their new alternatives (we would say improvements).
Over the course of five or 10 years, these savings amount to a huge five-figure sum.
Additional holidays
Motorhome owners also get value for money from the extra holidays and breaks they now enjoy.
This could be spur of the moment trips away. A weekend with nothing planned can suddenly turn into an impromptu trip to the coast or other area of interest. Friends and relatives around the country can now be visited much more readily too – there is less need t0 plan, no need to be an imposition and stay overnight, you have a travelling home from home.
Families regularly cram in extra trips at half term, one huge advantage of motorhomes is that a break can be any length of your choosing, this contrasting with traditional bookings that are often for a set seven days.
If you’re adventurous, a motorhome can also enable ski trips. A ski trip where you set off in a motorhome, follow the best snow and explore the stunning scenery is a huge upgrade on a package deal to one crowded resort.
Having a motorhome enables the owner and their family to have a frequency and quality of trip away that would otherwise be impossible.
