March 29, 2018
This year hasn’t got off to the best start weather wise (that’s 2018 in case you’re reading this in the future, though it probably applies to most years here in the UK…)
What this means for many motorhome owners is that their vehicle sits on the drive, unused, unloved, cold-looking.
However, it doesn’t have to be like that. You don’t have to wait for the warmer weather to head out on the roads, motorhomes also offer a host of winter opportunities.
Here we take a look at what we love about motorhome holidays in winter – and unseasonably wintery – conditions.
Motorhomes are cosy!
Because of the associations with camping and caravanning, there can be a natural tendency to think of motorhomes as unsuitable for winter breaks. This could not be further from the truth.
Motorhomes are incredibly well insulated and very good at retaining warmth in winter – in fact, they are far easier to keep warm than a lot of houses and buildings (as our office heating bills prove.)
All modern motorhomes should be fine with anything the UK typically serves up during a winter, though if you are unsure about the suitability of your model feel free to give us a bell.
Many models can cope with sterner tests too – motorhomes are commonly used by those wanting a ski holiday where you aren’t paying through the nose for a resort hotel.
Getting out the house and walking to the motorhome, and maybe clearing the snow off, might be cold. The journey and holiday itself – they’ll be fine!
Motorhomes have engines which make light work of wintery conditions
Motorhomes are among the very best vehicles to drive. The driving position offers a superb view of the road, the engines are punchy and reliable (they can cope with the same mileage as cars, yet rarely have to) and they have superb road holding.
Their ability to cope with ski holidays is again relevant – any vehicle than make it up icy mountain passes is going to be fine heading out on an A road for a UK city break.
Winter breaks are bonus holidays!
Using the motorhome for a summer holiday is obvious, so too an extra break here or there during spring or autumn.
What about winter though? It’s often the time you most need a break, yet also when people are less likely to take one.
Motorhomes allow you to just decide to go and take a break without any prior planning. Wake up a Saturday in February and think it would be nice to get away? You can. You can head off somewhere, it won’t be busy, and it won’t be expensive either.
This can also be a break during half-term or over the school Christmas holidays. Go away then and stay on a hotel or cottage and you’ll pay through the nose and everywhere will be full to bursting, take a motorhome and you can find a serene spot AND it’s good value. It is one of those rare win-wins!
Get your skis on
Are you a keen skier or snowboarder? If you are then you really should consider using your motorhome as a base – you can take all your gear, you save an absolute fortune and you can travel around to find the best snow.
If you aren’t sold on ski holidays, but have a motorhome then you have the perfect chance to try them out. You don’t have to drive to a top European resort, you could head up to Scotland and see skiing as just part of the trip, also just enjoying a wonderful winter getaway.
If you have kids, you could head off for a winter adventure and perhaps get a first taste of skiing – there are many resorts across Europe where the activities include reindeer-pulled sleigh rides, winter walks, outdoor swimming (an amazing experience, swimming in warm water as the snow falls…)
Alternatively, rent out your motorhome
If you really don’t intend using your motorhome during the winter months, why not consider renting it out? There are sites that help out with the whole process – as luck has it we have written about this topic before; head this way if you want to know more.
