We’re not here to criticise package holidays.
They have their benefits, we can’t think of many right now, but there are definitely at least a couple of benefits.
We do though think motorhome holidays are infinitely better. Here are 10 reasons to back up that claim!
Head off in your motorhome and you have the freedom to go where the mood takes you. You might have an initial destination in mind, but after that you can decide to explore another area. You can act on recommendations –someone tells you about a great site a drive away, why not head there for a few days?
If the weather is better than expected, you can head closer to the coast, if you’re unlucky enough to have a rainy break, you can head inland, or towards a town with its rainy-day attractions.
But book a package holiday and the only going with the flow is your lilo being slowly blown by the swimming pool filter fan.
Or the lack of them… You can pay for an upgrade, or jump in a taxi, but generally package holiday transfers are sitting on a coach for a couple of hours.
You might get to see a bit of the holiday location, or at least a series of other hotels as you approach your stop. And if you happen to go past somewhere that looks amazing – tough luck, that’s not where you’re saying. In a motorhome, if you drive past somewhere enchanting you can stop and explore.
Modern motorhomes are a home from home. They have all mod cons, comfy beds and you can add any little luxuries you like. And these might not be so little –wifi, kitchens that chefs would be envious of, entertainment systems…
Hotels can of course be amazing, but rooms on package holiday deals can be very hit and miss. Opening the door to your room on a package holiday is a heart in mouth moment, what’s it going to be like? In a motorhome, there’s just the knowledge that you’ve got a great space.
With your motorhome, you can always be assured a beautiful vista. Simply find a park in an attractive setting and park in a spot with a great view.
On a package holiday, the view might be of the sea, it might be of beautiful gardens, or it might be of the emergency staircase.
A package holiday certainly promises something for everyone, but in reality do they not really give anyone what they want?
There isn’t quite enough to keep the kids entertained, the pool isn’t really relaxing, and the food, while plentiful, is the type of thing you find in plentiful supply at any UK retail park.
But a motorhome allows you to have a few days which perfectly suit one person, then some time doing what someone else wants. You can have a few days of relaxing quiet in a secluded spot, then you could head into a town for a bit of retail therapy.
To get a good package holiday, you’re going to need to book well in advance, often the best deals for the summer will be available the previous autumn.
But who wants to set something in stone that early, what if you have a change of heart? What if the political situation changes and that trip to an adventurous destination suddenly seems less appealing.
With a motorhome, you can leave it far later. You can be spontaneous, you can head off to Europe with nothing booked at all and just see where the roads take you.
Head off in a motorhome and you almost cannot fail to meet interesting people. You tend to actually interact with locals by visiting places off the tourist trail.
Package holidays are highly sanitised, the locals you meet are often just there in a serving capacity. A motorhome holiday means you meet people more as equals.
We have made many lifelong friends from our motorhome adventures, how often can you say that after a week in a 3* hotel at one of the Costas?
Package holidays have their benefits, they can be good for unwinding, just resetting the brain for a week.
But how many are truly memorable? If you have kids, will package holidays give them an experience they will always remember, or will it just be a nice, but ultimately forgettable time abroad?
Motorhome holidays give you something money really can’t buy – memories. Memories of the journey, memories of finding that hidden gem, memories of eating a meal outside the motorhome at night, under beautiful moonlight.
Are you a keen skier or snowboarder?
Motorhomes offer a great alternative when heading to the slopes. Book months in advance on a package deal and you run the risk of poor local conditions. There could be too little snow, or too much, or perhaps the resort just doesn’t stack up with the images you saw online.
But with a motorhome, you can follow the best snow. You can try out new slopes for a day or two, without committing to the for the entire holiday, and you can also enjoy skiing without having to stay in a hotel right in the heart of the Apres Ski noise.
You get into a conversation about holidays; we’ve all been there. There’s the couple who went to South America, there’s Dave and Anna, they went on a cruise.
Steve and Nancy flew to Sardinia to a ‘little place they know’ (really they just found it on Expedia).
What are you going to say… ‘We went on a package holiday to Mallorca for a week’, or we took the motorhome, took a ferry to France and then just drove. We spent two night in the Dordogne, then headed to the coast. Then we headed south to the mountains, before a wonderful couple of nights on the border with Spain. You would not believe the food we had there…
