Caravans and motorhomes both offer the holidaymaker a chance for independence. They both open up a world of wonderful opportunities and memories.
At Emm Bee, motorhome are our passion, but we’re not going to be critical of caravans; caravans have many great qualities and we admire anyone who chooses to take control of their own holiday rather than following the package holiday herd.
However, we do think there are some advantages to upgrading from a caravan to a motorhome and so, without further ado…
Ease of Driving:
If you find driving a caravan straightforward then this might not concern you, but for many the thought of the journey is enough to out them off taking the caravan out in the first place.
A motorhome is far easier to drive and manoeuvre, especially if you try to go on any roads a little bit off the beaten track.
And as for parking up and trying to do anything that involves going backwards, well caravans are stressful even for those just watching!
Driving a motorhome is a pleasure – the raised cab suits the size of vehicle and visibility is often better than that you’ll get in a car. There are also often driving aids to make it easier, such as parking sensors and even cameras.
Value for money
A new motorhome is likely to cost more than a new caravan, so in that regard it is easier to get a caravan.
However, there is more to a purchase than just the initial price.
Caravans depreciate heavily, a caravan has a shelf life and so depreciates down to being almost worthless over the years and decades. After all, how many 20 year-old caravans do you see out there?
Motorhomes depreciate too of course, but at a slower rate. In fact, if you opt for a high-quality second hand motorhome you can find its rate of depreciation to be very slow. The initial depreciation will have happened before your purchase and after that the drop off rate is gradual. You could trade it in in five years time and find a newer model is very affordable.
Motorhomes can also be rented out when not in use – there are websites to smooth this process.
A motorhome is likely to be a better long-term investment, although budget might dictate a caravan is a more obtainable ption right now.
You are likely to use it more
Caravans and motorhomes both offer independence, but motorhomes have some advantages in this field.
Motorhomes are often used for more spur-of-the-moment trips, you can just get in and start driving and head pretty much anywhere. You don’t have to worry about the roads, there’s not as much planning as with a caravan holiday.
And there are even whole types of holiday that aren’t an option for a caravan. Motorhomes are a great option for ski holidays, you can drive to France, Austria or another ski location in a vehicle that can easily cope with the roads and climate. Driving a caravan up into the Alps, well, it’s not something we’d fancy!
Take more
Did you know that motorhomes can typically carry a lot more than a caravan.
Of course with a caravan, you also have the car, though much of this space is going to be taken by the passengers!
A motorhome can be packed full, there is less cause for little compromises.
With both a caravan and motorhome holiday, you want your home away from home to feel cosy and well-stocked, you want evenings in or rainy days to feel enjoyable. The fact you can take more in a motorhome helps with this, you can pack the kids’ games, the Lego sets, the best crockery rather than plastic. You can just take more!
Money well spent?
